CLUB NEWS
PROTECTING CHILDREN AND VULNERABLE ADULTS

Ross Smith presented us with details of changes to the Child Wellbeing and Safety Act 2005. These changes apply to all service clubs. He said we will no longer be able to rely solely on a Working With Children (WWC) check to determine if a person is a fit and proper person.

Some of the key messages were:
  1. Each Rotary club must have a policy which covers the protection of children and vulnerable adults.
  2. They must also have a Code of Conduct.
  3. There needs to be a screening process in place as part of reviewing a potential member.
  4. The club must respond to and report any abuse.
  5. Each club is autonomous - we need to establish our own rules.
  6. Doing nothing is not an option.
Ross posed a number of relevant questions:
  • Should all current members have a WWC check?
  • Should all new members have a WWC check?
  • How do we reference check new members?
  • How do we reference check volunteers?
  • Who does the checking?
At the last Board meeting, it was agreed that the club should develop and maintain a document which incorporates both a policy and a Code of Conduct.

If you have any comments or proposed changes to the document, please forward them to President Ross Conley or Secretary Ross Smith by no later than Wednesday 27th September.

TIME FOR A JAPANESE GARDEN MAKEOVER

The Japanese Garden which was constructed by our club in the mid-90's at the Wyndham Council offices is in need of a facelift. There will be a working bee, held jointly with Hoppers Crossing Rotary, on Sunday 8th October.

We will perform maintenance on the garden and add some new plants to the display. Wyndham Council officers will be on site at 9am and they will supply tools and plants.

If you can assist on the day, please advise Jason Daddy or President Ross.

HOMEMADE ENTERTAINMENT FOR CHISTMAS

This is an early notice about our Christmas Dinner. It will be held at Wyndham Cache on Tuesday 12th December.

Social Director, Geoff Smith, has advised that the highlight of the evening, apart from the musical entertainment supplied by the Barking Dogs, will be a talent quest called Rotary's Got Talent.

All we need are a number of acts. Are you a closet singer, dancer or actor? Can you swallow swords, juggle, mime, throw flames or do an Irish jig? Whatever your specialty, please contact Geoff as soon as possible and then start rehearsing. It is not a competition, just a lighthearted form of entertainment. Maybe you can join forces with a few other like-minded members or partners and perform together.

We have had a few talent quests before and they always prove to be funny and entertaining. Come on - give it a go!

IN BRIEF........
  • If you have ordered a new Rotary polo, cap or apron, they can be picked up from President Ross.
  • We welcomed John Scicluna from the Rotary Club of Flemington as a visiting Rotarian.
  • Lyn Fava introduced Carlo Vimercati who is interested in joining Rotary. Carlo has led an interesting life which we may get to hear about if he becomes a member.
  • It was also good to see the smiling face of Lorry Rowe again.
  • District 9800 is calling for clubs to nominate a Past President to serve on the Nominating Committee that will select a nominee for District Governor for 2020-21. If you think there is a Past President in our club who would be suitable for the role, please submit your suggestion in writing to President Ross.
  • There will be a joint cluster meeting on Tuesday 24th October. This will involve the clubs from Werribee, Wyndham, Hoppers Crossing, Laverton Point Cook and Williamstown. More details to be supplied later.
  • The 25th Paul Harris Breakfast will be held at the RACV Club on Tuesday 21st November. The guest speaker will be Daniel Flynn, one of Australia's most successful entrepreneurs under the age of 30. He is the founder and managing director of the social enterprise Thankyou, which has given more than $5.5 million to help end global poverty. The cost is $65 per person. Click here to make a booking.
  • At our meeting on October 10, we will be having a Hat Day for the Australian Rotary Health Lift the Lid campaign which raises funds for mental health awareness.
  • Our exchange student Andrea is passionate about horses and horse riding. It was no surprise, therefore, that she was seen at the Equestrian centre volunteering her services during the Victorian Equestrian Championships. Here is a photo of her helping to set up the jumps on a cold day.

ROTARY FEATURE
NEW PAD FOR WHITE ROOS

The Rotary Club of Bordertown, South Australia, recently built shelters for Bordertown Wildlife Park’s famous mob of white kangaroos.

The roos needed shelter, but the park couldn’t afford workers -- something the Rotary Club of Bordertown was happy to provide.

The animals were already snubbing tin shelters. “It was too loud when it rained,” said club member Trevor Butler. The solution: Using native broombush for new shelters.

“A bunch of Rotarians went down to a property in Willalooka with lots of broombush, cutting off a trailer load of big bundles,” Butler said. “We then built a frame and had to learn how to thatch properly. It was a learning curve as we hadn’t done that sort of thing before.”

After all this effort, it wasn’t certain the white kangaroos would take to their new “furniture.”

However, one freezing, wet day, not long after the shelters went up, Trevor took a look on his way to work. “Sure enough, they were all huddled in the two thatched shelters – and none were in the tin shed.”

Rotary plans on building additional shelters for the two other paddocks that the roos are rotated through, and is discussing further involvement in sanctuary maintenance and expanding the operation.

Councillor and Rotarian Ken McInerney commented: “Bordertown’s white kangaroos are one of our largest tourist draw cards, making a big impact on our local economy. They are also wonderful ambassadors for native wildlife, drawing attention to its beauty and uniqueness.”
