THIS WEEK......
STRONG GROWTH AHEAD FOR WYNDHAM
Mia Shaw has been a councillor with the City of Wyndham for 3 years and is the current Mayor.
Needless to say, despite the many and varied challenges facing the Council, she is very optimistic about the future of the municipality.
One of Mia's key goals is to improve the quality of life for the whole community. This will be achieved through some of the city's current and future initiatives which include:
- Making Wyndham a more family-friendly city. There are over 200 local parks and open spaces in Wyndham. $12 million has been budgeted this year to upgrade some of these areas. New park benches will be installed and 5,500 trees will be planted.
- Revitalising the city centre through development projects such as the 12-storey Hunter Project next to Ballan House and the renovation of the Bridge Hotel.
- $140 million dedicated to capital works projects in order to alleviate some of our major road congestion issues.
- Collaboration with private enterprise to bring new sporting and business ventures into the area. A recent example of this is the successful selection of the Western United Soccer Club into the A-League.
- Increasing tourism to the area. Over 1 million people visit Wyndham each year.
FOOTBALL THEME NIGHT - 24th SEPTEMBER
On 24th September, the last Tuesday before the AFL Grand Final, we will be having a football theme night.
The special guest speaker will be Jeff "Joffa" Corfe who has gained notoriety through his role as cheer squad leader for the Collingwood Football Club.
He is an effervescent character who has some good stories to tell. He will also talk about some of the lows in his life including his daughter's battle with epilepsy.
Feel free to invite others to attend. We would also encourage you to get in the spirit of the occasion by wearing the colours of your team. It will be a great night.
INTERNATIONAL CUISINE EVENING - 1st OCTOBER
You're invited to our International Cuisine Evening which is being held at Di Caprio's Restaurant on Tuesday 1st October.
You will have a choice of some fabulous Italian, Greek, Asian and Spanish food at a cost of only $25 per person. Vegetarian meals will also be available.
In addition there will be a big raffle. There will be many prizes including a range of overseas wines. All proceeds will be directed to our international projects.
The International Committee want this to be a BIG NIGHT for the club so they would like you to invite as many family members and/or friends as possible.
WERN
Joe Cumbo has asked for some assistance at the WERN warehouse in Derrimut. He is looking for a few volunteers on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday to help clients to select relevant household goods, to sort and catalogue stock or to pick up or deliver items.
Our club is one of 8 west suburban Rotary clubs that play a lead role in the management of WERN (Western Emergency Relief Network) which provides essential household goods to needy families in the west.
If you can help every now and again, it would very much appreciated. Please discuss further with President Brian or Joe Cumbo.
DOLLY PARTON'S IMAGINATION LIBRARY
Dolly Parton and Rotary are working together to give the gift of literacy to kids across Australia.
The Imagination Library is a community-based program which provides preschool children with free home-delivered books and literacy resources each month.
The goal is to help Australian children, especially those in disadvantaged communities, to gain the skills they need to start school ready to read, learn and succeed in life.
Our club is working with the Manor Vale Primary School to determine if the program will proceed. The initial aim is to help 30 children at a cost of $30 per child per month. Therefore, our commitment would be $3,240 per year which would be reviewed monthly and annually.
A final decision about our involvement is yet to be made.

ROTARY OVERSEAS RECYCLED PLAYGROUNDS
The Rotary Overseas Recycled Playground (RORP) program is all about Rotary clubs working together to dismantle unwanted local school and community playground equipment and bundling them for export to developing countries through Donations in Kind.
One of the lead clubs in this project is the Rotary Club of Yarraville and their President, Scott Reineman, attended our meeting and asked for assistance to dismantle a large playground at Wembley Primary School on Saturday 21st September. If you can help for a few hours on that day, please let President Brian know.
ST. ANDREW'S PARISH FAIR - 16th NOVEMBER
The St. Andrew's primary school will be holding its annual Parish Fair on Saturday 16th November and President Brian is keen for us to have a stall at the event. He says this is an opportunity for us to have a greater exposure with the greater community and to raise some funds at this well-established and popular family fair.
PAUL HARRIS BREAKFAST
The Rotary Club of Central Melbourne is holding its 27th annual Rotary Foundation Paul Harris Breakfast on Thursday 21st November 2019 at the RACV City Club.
The guest speaker will be Dr Andrew Browning who has spent 17 years living with his family in Ethiopia amongst some of the poorest people in the world.
He specialises in treating a devastating birth injury called obstetric fistula.
Andrew is one of only a handful of surgeons in the world who have dedicated their lives to helping treat this problem. His charity has now built 3 maternity hospitals in Africa.
