Chenny Chen first visited us on August 25th and at our meeting this week was able to fill us in a little more about himself and his background, together with some of the things he would like to do. Last Friday Chenny joined in on the first meeting of the Environment Project team, led by Kathryn Williams. Chenny has expressed his interest in Werribee Rotary Club and Peter Ross will be talking more with him about this.
New Visitors
It was a pleasure to have Michelle Yi and Rachael Hall visit this week’s meeting. Michelle and Rachael, as Wyndham residents we would be delighted to have you join us again, so that we all can get to know each other a little better.
Ian Hovey comes up Trumps
Thanks to Ian Hovey for arranging such a wonderful series of guest speakers.
This week Ian introduced Jala Shekho, the Community & Stakeholder Engagement Lead for Transurban’s Westgate Tunnel Project. In addition, Jala brought with her three of the Senior Project Engineers, in Chris McKenna, Sankel Gole and Hilary. Between them, they were able to provide fascinating information about this massive infrastructure project in Melbourne’s west.
Next week Ian’s invited guest speaker will be Kelly Grigsby, the CEO of the City of Wyndham.
Thinking about Rotary’s Walk With Us during October?
As part of Rotary’s End Polio Now campaign, District 9800 has arranged this fundraising activity during the whole of October.
Every one of us walks every day!
Why not convert your walking into your personal Rotary Service activity for October?
This week on Zoom we had a wonderful presentation by the Westgate Tunnel Authority.

Jala Shekho - Community & Stakeholder Lead
Chris McKenna - Engineer Eastern Zone (Footscray Road to the Tunnel)
Sanket Gole - Engineer Engineer for the Tunnel Section
Hilary - Engineer for the Westgate Freeway to M80 Ringroad section
As a result of Covid restrictions, the builder had to reduce their staff levels by 30%. This is impacting progress on the project. As the project is going through residential areas, the builder is restricted by the amount of work that can be done at nights and on weekends. There is also a long running dispute with the state government over millions of tonnes of contaminated soil, and the relocation of gas and sewerage pipes.
The evening television news services only a few days ago, reported that a resolution on the toxic soil is imminent, and that the state government will pay the estimated removal cost of $3 billion. The state government is still maintaining that their contract is fixed, and that the builder is responsible for the soil removal cost, and completion on time. The builder believes works are about 12 months behind schedule.
The club is required to update its constitution & by-laws regularly, so they reflect the requirements of Rotary International.
Rotary International changes its rules every three years, following the Council on Legislation, where representatives of all districts around the world get together to consider rule changes, proposed by RI, Districts and clubs.
The latest changes have been incorporated in RI's rules, and now clubs must change their rules & constitution so that it does not conflict with the RI Rules.
75% of RC of Werribee members or 25-26, need to vote in favour of the changes. We were going to hold the meeting to vote on Zoom on 15.09.2020, but we only have about 15 members on Zoom each week. We need those members who are not attending on Zoom, to complete the paper based Proxy Form, and forward it to Secretary Kim Deneys ASAP, so we have 75% voting. Download the form below.

Our footy tipping competition went right down to the wire. Nobody was able to catch Ross Conley.
After sitting in second place for the last 10 weeks or so, Peter Ross 'fell at the last hurdle', and got pipped for second by Ann Smith (thanks to the controversial bonus point for tipping all winners in a round)
Tony Todaro also made a late run, to tie with Peter Ross for third.
Thanks to Ian & Ross who ran the competition.
