PRESIDENTS MESSAGE

At last Tuesday’s meeting, a small group of members were treated to a great presentation from Annabelle and Caitlin who are year-11 students at MacKillop College.

They were our representatives at the recent MUNA event where they worked with, and competed against, students from other schools in a United Nations style forum.

It was a real challenge for the girls because they were allocated North Korea as their country. This was a tough challenge because, not only did they have difficulty in finding much information during their research but they also had to defend their “country” and argue in favour of things like nuclear warfare. But, according to the organiser, they performed extremely well under the circumstances. Annabelle and Caitlin both enjoyed the experience and were grateful to our club for giving them the opportunity to participate.

The Rotary World Convention in Melbourne has now finished. About 14,000 delegates from around the world attended. Peter Ross, Graham Roper and Kim Deneys went to some or all of the components on offer. They were complimentary about the event which was geographically split between the actual convention at Rod Laver Arena and the House of Friendship at Jeff’s Shed. Peter was particularly glowing in his praise of the speakers.

For those who are wondering how Ross and Christine are doing on their travels up north, I received a message from Ross the other day to say that they are currently in Hervey Bay and will be moving on next week. They ventured along to the Maryborough Show last week. The highlight for them was the state final of the wood chopping competition. Sounds like they are living the high life.

SAVE THE DATE - On Tuesday 27th June we will have the first of our health-related forums conducted by Professor Vasso Apostolopolous. Her first talk will be titled “Is COVID the Worst Pandemic?”. Then, on the last meeting of each month, there will be other health talks with each of them addressing a different topic.

Next week we will hear from Colin and Bob, both ex-policemen who are now associated with Police Veterans Victoria.

Hope you can make it.

Ian

THIS WEEK AT ROTARY

This weeks guest speakers were Annabelle York & Caitlan Clements, who were our representatives at MUNA 2023.

MUNA (Model United Nations Assembly) is a Rotary District 9800 program. All Rotary clubs in our district, are encouraged to nominate two students to participate in a debate, modelled on the United Nations.

Annabelle & Caitlan are year 11 students from McKillop College, who were joined at our meeting by their Year 11 co-ordinator Andrew Exton.

About 4 weeks prior to MUNA, the girls were advised that they had been allocated North Korea, and were provided with about 25 Resolutions that were going to be debated on the day. Each country will participate in four debates during the day, and the students have to debate representing the views of North Korea.

During the preceding 4 weeks, the girls had to research North Korea, to understand their country and systems. They were also encouraged to dress in the style of North Korea. The girls explained that finding information about North Korea was extremely difficult. Being considered a 'rogue nation' most of the information on the internet is anti North Korea. There is also very little promotional information from the government of North Korea, as the regime is very secretive in everything they do.

Bunnings BBQ - 25.05.2023

Last weeks Bunnings BBQ was held on a cold windy day, where it rained most of the day. Our 'profit' was well down on previous BBQ's, but we have a bit of stock for the next BBQ.
We were able to unveil the "new Werribee Rotary" table cloths, which looked great, and left our customers in no doubt who we were.

Interact
Pres elect Kim, advised that a working bee was held last week, and the first 5 wicking beds were erected. Thanks to Jim Randall who provided the soil, and Brian & Enzo who organised the crates.
The beds are above ground, and only need minimal water.

Werribee Rotary Footy Tipping - Round 11
After a couple of rounds where everyone was getting 8's & 9's, Round 11 proved to be the most difficult round for the year.

Most tippers went to bed on Saturday night with only one winner out of the first six rounds. Tipping on Sunday was a bit easier.

For round 11, Pres Ian tipped 5 winners, as well as Lee. Lee needs a few big weeks as he is coming last.
There were 7 tippers who got 4 - the Ross's - S & C, Jimmy, Tino, Peter Ross, Rick & Redder.

Andrew Exton got he $10 as he was one of the few who tipped the Swans to beat Carlton.

After eleven rounds the leaderboard is
  • Ross S - 71 winners
  • Ann & Brian - 69 points
  • Jimmy - 68 points
  • Alan Lee is last with 56.

OTHER BUSINESS

Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA)
This years RYLA camp will take place from 3rd to 9th December at Camp Getaway Bendigo.

RYLA is an intensive leadership experience for young adults between the ages of 17 & 23. Attendees will develop their skills as a leader and develop friendships and connections. If you know someone between 17 and 23 who would benefit by improving their leadership skills, speak to Pres Ian or PE Kim. Werribee Rotary will sponsor one or two students, so there will be no cost to the students.

WERN

WERN gets a lot of second hand (and new) stock from Koala. They are changing their warehousing, and we have been able to get about 6-8 truckloads of stock. A lot has already arrived, and more is coming this week.

We are desperately in need of some volunteers to move the stock upstairs to storage, and into the racks. Some furniture needs to be assembled.

WERN is open next week on Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday from 9.30am till 3.00pm. If you or a friend can help us on any of these days even for a few hours, we would love your help.

Let Ross Smith or Rob Fava know ASAP if you can help us.

Also many thanks to Glenyce Deneys who has been repairing some WERN blankets, fitted sheets etc.
