PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Our newest Honorary Member
Welcome to Geoff Smith who became an Honorary Member of Werribee Rotary at last night’s meeting. In the process Geoff had to go through a quite a bit of roasting from some of his long-standing friends in the Club. Geoff’s wonderful achievements during his 20 years membership were highlighted by several people, including Ian Knight.
More recently, Geoff’s support for the Fit4Use store was acknowledged by Anne Heyes, President of Flemington-Kensington Rotary, who presented Geoff with a Community Service Award from her Club. This was followed by Lorry Rowe, Flemington-Kensington Rotary member, who presented Geoff with a Certificate of Appreciation from herself and the team at the Fit4Use Store.
I was delighted to present Geoff with an inscribed Rotary Plaque as our newest Honorary Member. We look forward seeing Geoff and Lexie at some Club events in the future. He joins our other Honorary Members, Chris Ochaya and Ned Amezdroz.

Letter received from Geoff Smith
Ladies & Gentlemen,
Due to the limitations on last night’s Zoom Rotary Meeting, I would just like to pass on my thanks to all that put last night’s program together.
I was most humbled by the messages, presentations and comments by all my Rotary friends and will cherish your thoughts and well wishes and wish the Club the very best in the years to come.
As I said on the announcement on the night of my resignation, it was not goodbye, but see you later.
See You Later
Regards
Geoff Smith

The D9800 Rotary Citation presented to Past President Brian Ahmed
Past DG Grant Hocking awarded the 2019-20 Rotary Citation Platinum Certificate to Brian Ahmed and the Club for their achievements during the past Rotary year. In June 2019 Grant, as the new District Governor, had attended Brian’s Induction as Club President. It was a delight to meet up with Grant again at last night’s meeting.  This Rotary Citation award is a wonderful recognition of what Brian and the Club did during the six months before the Covid pandemic lockdown. The award requires clubs to meet strict criteria of, Uniting People & Taking Action.

Ian’s Trivia Quiz
Last night Ian Hovey showed us how to have an engaging Trivia Quiz on Zoom. This was a GREAT first-up event for Ian, who had devised the questions, the format for running the quiz and the progressive score card. Where might this successful event lead on to?

Have you voted yet?
A special General Meeting is being held on Wed, Sept 29th to ratify the Club’s Constitution and By-laws. It is MOST IMPORTANT that you vote by notifying Kim Deneys by email or phone
(Kim sent an email to every member on Sept 9th about this.)

A Great October Project for Werribee Rotary
Rob Fava will be talking more to the Club about this opportunity for our members to undertake Rotary Service in October, during Covid-19 lockdown time.
As part of Rotary’s End Polio Now international campaign, our District has organised a fundraising activity Walk With Us, for those who can’t during October 2020.
The total distance walked can be accumulated over the month of October.
Individuals and groups can walk when, where and with whom you want in a COVID safe way. Each walk can be logged on the website as can fundraising totals.
Registration is free:   https://www.rotarywalkwithus.org/
This is a wonderful way for you to be involved in a ‘hands on’ activity – by WALKING!
Every kilometre counts - walking the dog, walking to the shops, walking around the golf course, walking for exercise or just walking for pleasure!
What about a TEAM of Werribee Rotarians entering?

Welcome to Our Visitors
It is always a pleasure to have visitors at our meetings. Thank you to Chenny Chen, Paule Kudi, AG Amrit Singh, Past DG Grant Hocking, Pres. Anne Heyes and Lorry Rowe for joining out meeting last night.

Enjoy the Spring weather this week!
Michael

This Week on Zoom
This week on Zoom we had the induction of Geoff Smith as an Honorary Member, and the "first" Zoom Trivia Quiz.

Guests were PDG Grant Hocking, AG Amrit Singh, Anne Hayes & Lorri Rowe from RC Flemington Kensington, and Chenny Chen.

We were only allocated 10 minutes to tell a few stories about Geoff. We should have been allocated about an hour, as we missed heaps, including:
  • The trip to Mt Buller where Geoff tried to inflict alcoholic poisoning on Phil & Ross
  • The Perth Conference bus trip, where he nearly got the club kicked out of the Walpole Motel
  • Our Gold Coast houseboat holiday, where he ran us aground in the main Brisbane to Gold Coast channel
  • etc etc

Thanks to Ian Hovey who ran the World First Rotary Zoom Trivia Quiz. There was three rounds of 10 questions, and you marked your own score after each round.

The joint winners were PDG Grant Hocking, and Anne Hayes from RC of Flemington Kensington.

Club Constitution & By-Laws
The club is required to update its constitution & by-laws regularly, so they reflect the requirements of Rotary International.

Rotary International changes its rules every three years, following the Council on Legislation, where representatives of all districts around the world get together to consider rule changes, proposed by RI, Districts and clubs.

The latest changes have been incorporated in RI's rules, and now clubs must change their rules & constitution so that it does not conflict with the RI Rules.

75% of RC of Werribee members or 25-26, need to vote in favour of the changes. We were going to hold the meeting to vote on Zoom on 15.09.2020, but we only have about 15 members on Zoom each week. We need those members who are not attending on Zoom, to complete the paper based Proxy Form, and forward it to Secretary Kim Deneys ASAP, so we have 75% voting. Download the form below.
