PRESIDENTS MESSAGE

Hi all.
After a short medical layoff, I’m now back in action and ready to end the Rotary year with a bang.

Last Tuesday, we hosted a Youth Mental Health Forum at the Werribee Football Club for two local under-18 football teams. We had about 60 boys attending plus 12 Rotarians and friends. There were three excellent speakers who were able to relate their own personal stories about overcoming adversity through their own determination and with the help of friends and family.

It's always difficult to measure the success or otherwise of such a forum because, while the boys listened, they didn’t express any opinions or ask any questions. Let’s just hope it hit the spot and that, if they are experiencing any anxious and dark moments, they can reach out for help.

My special thanks to Peter Sandlant for his mighty efforts in organising the forum.

Peter has also organised an under-18 football game to be played at Chirnside Park on Saturday afternoon between Hoppers Crossing and Werribee. If you have some spare time between 3:00 and 6:30, please come along to the match. They are playing for the Werribee Rotary Beyond Blue Cup. It should be a cracker-jack game.

Our guest speaker next week will be George Petrou who recently spoke at Wyndham Rotary. They regarded him as one of the most inspirational speakers they have heard.

George is a renowned Melbourne artist who is a successful graphic designer and acclaimed portrait artist. George also assists in supporting the interests and welfare of ex-servicemen and women, their families, and dependents.

In June 2020 he was awarded an OAM for “Services to the Visual Arts and to Veterans”, and in the same year, he released The Art Of Sacrifice – a haunting and poignant exploration of a spirit like no other: the Anzac Spirit.

George’s portraits proudly hang in museums in France, Government House Canberra, and a range of military institutions across Australia.

I look forward to your company next week.

Ian

THIS WEEK AT ROTARY

This weeks Mental Health Forum at Werribee Football Club was well attended. The boys from Hoppers Crossing and Werribee Districts football, listened to three speakers.
  1. Conner Thar, a Werribee Footballer Conner told us of the highs and lows of trying to become an elite footballer, from missing being drafted to an AFL club, and then some serious injuries that have prevented him playing at lower levels.
  2. Nick Coughlan - the current captain of VFL side Werribee. Nick also talked about the highs and lows, from being drafted to St Kilda, then being delisted. He also spoke of his personel setbacks, before coming to Werribee.
  3. Michael Martin is a sports psychologist who has worked with a number of elite sporting organisations including Cricket Australia, AFL clubs, & NRL clubs, where he is currently working with Brisbane Broncos. Mick's story was very powerful, and challenged the 'boys' to set goals that are above their current level of achievement.

Well done Peter Sandlant who organised the night.
