This Week - 19.05.2020
This weeks guest speaker at our Zoom meeting was Ken Maxfield from the Camp Getaway Committee.
Ken has been a member of Gisborne, Flemington & Nth Balwyn clubs, and is currently a member of Yea Rotary in D9799
Ken has been on the Camp Getaway committee for more than 20 years, and his passion for Camp Getaway was rewarded by D9800, with the award of Rotarian of the Year 2019.
Camp Getaway is located at Axedale, midway between Bendigo & Heathcote. It is owned by D9800, and caters for people with special needs and disabilities. It can cater for up to 100 people.
Werribee Rotary has had a long association with Camp Getaway. We have had at least 6-8 weekend working bees, completing projects such as:
- Built large pergola at rear of the main hall.
- Sanded and stained the the timber floor in the hall.
- Replaced the stairs at the rear of the hall.
- Major landscaping
- Painting
- etc
It is a great venue, and the club should consider another working bee & weekend away when the camp reopens.

Next week - 26.05.2020
The guest speaker at next weeks zoom meeting is local Werribee Doctor Joe Garra.
Joe is a passionate Werribee resident, who stood as an independent in the 2018 Victorian state election. Joe stood in the seat of Werribee, which is one of the safest seats in the state. He did extremely well, receiving more than 20% of first preference votes, exceeding the vote of the Liberal candidate, and causing a large swing against sitting member Tim Pallas. You can often hear Joe on radio 3AW, flying the flag for Werribee.
Joe will be talking about the impact of Covid on Werribee, what the numbers mean, some of the confusion, and the selective use of the facts by both sides of politics.

WERN (Western Emergency Relief Network)
WERN has been closed for 2 months due to Covid. A lot of work is taking place to reopen the business in the next few weeks. Werribee Rotary is a member of WERN.
One of the major donors to WERN is the Koala Mattress business. They sell their mattresses with a 90 day return, and as they are second hand they obviously cant be resold.
Koala has just relocated to Dandenong, so there will be a requirement on most Mondays to travel to Dandenong in the WERN truck and pick up 6-10 mattresses.
Werribee Rotary have put their hand up to do the pickup each Monday. We will need 2 people for about 4-5 hours. If you can assist once a month or something like that, can you register your interest with Ross Smith.
